This is where the magic starts to happen
Wild Bee Flower Farm is a northern flower house, aiming to provide every single stem for every order whether it is a gift bouquet or a big budget wedding. It’s important to us that we know how and where our flowers have been grown. As florists we have the privilege of literally handpicking the best flowers for your events.
We provide a refreshingly sustainable and deeply personal approach of growing through to floral design. We are proud to grow with organic and permaculture approaches, meaning your flowers are grown without pesticides.
The flowers and foliage are grown across two plots, with the workshop and annual cut flower plot situated in Acomb, York. There is something magical and unexpected knowing that your flowers were grown just down the road when you live in a large city.
OUR ETHOS IS BASED ON
-
There is no single official definition of sustainability in the floristry industry, but being a sustainable florist means making choices that protect the health of the earth, the environment, and the people touched in all aspects of the life of the flowers.
At Wild Bee Flowers we are committed to maintaining a sustainable farm and floristry practice and are working hard towards certification through B-Corp and the Soil Association.
-
We are pesticide and herbicide free on our farm and workshops - using only certified organic systems instead of harmful chemicals. For example we use natural biological controls such as nematodes for slugs and ladybirds for aphids.
We allow wildlife patches on our farm to act a as havens for predators and pollinators whilst also increasing the biodiversity of our plots. As many of our events are grow-to-order we have much less floral waste then conventional floristry shops. Or farm is incredibly local to York so the energy demand for transport is a fraction of traditional imported flowers.
-
We constantly strive to reduce the impact of our activity on the environment whilst maintaining the highest standards and quality of flowers. We hate to waste anything on our farm. We use a no-dig approach to weed control so all cardboard packaging is kept and used to dry-mulch the beds at the end of the season.
Our first poly-tunnel did not survive a particularly bad storm but the metalwork and structural components have been reused as plant supports and climbing stakes.
-
Traditionally, florists produce a large volume of off-cut stems and unwanted leaves when creating floral designs - we are in a unique position as these materials are simply returned to the soil through our composting system.
We have invested in a HotBin composter that has the ability to burn through even the toughest stems as well as being able to take on those pesky weeds.
